Reflection #4 What's so funny about mental illness by Ruby Wax
The 4th and final TED Talk that I watched and reviewed is titled What's So Funny About Mental Illness by Ruby Wax.
This TED Talk takes a humorous approach in talking about mental illness and the fact that one in four people suffer from some sort of mental illness. The talker Ruby Wax, talks about how she is in the one in four category. She talks about how it all started and tells about her story. After telling her story, she goes on to mention how mental illness is stigmatized in today's society and how people think that mental illnesses are not as severe as they actually are. This talks about the fact that when someone is physically injured people comfort them and help them get through it but when someone is suffering from mental damage they are told that it is "all in their head" or that they should "get over it".
I really enjoyed this TED Talk by Ruby Wax because it does a good job and not being too serious but also having the ability to show how important the topic is in a humorous way. She talks about topics that are very important and relevant to people that have mental illnesses because it discusses what it is like to have something that you suffer from being looked down upon and seen as weird. I learned a lot from this TED Talk because it taught me the point of view of a person who has the mental illness rather than just facts about the mental illness. When learning about the brain and psychology, I find that it is very important to not only research the types of mental illnesses themselves but also the feelings of patients suffering from the illnesses. This TED Talk does a great job of doing both.
In conclusion, This TED Talk is an amazing one to watch if you are interested in psychology and how mental illness affects people. Our society needs to be more supportive of people with mental illnesses by not attaching such a strong stigma to mental illnesses.
Until Next Time,
